Design
The 2012 E-Class Coupes are the only cars in their class to offer sweeping vistas unencumbered by visible framework between their four fully retractable side windows. It's an elaborate feat of engineering to uphold two Mercedes-Benz traditions: unmatched style and extraordinary strength. The view from outside is no less enticing, with a chiseled, muscular physique and a confident stance.
The standard Panorama sunroof features a vast expanse of heat-reflecting tinted glass overhead, to provide all four passengers in an E-Class Coupe with a dramatic view of the sky. At the touch of a button, the front portion tilts up for draft-free ventilation or slides back for a breeze. A power sliding mesh screen helps filter out sunlight.
The optional Appearance Package adds fashionable and functional enhancements to any E-Class Coupe, starting with 18-inch AMG twin 5-spoke alloy wheels, multicontour front seats and brushed aluminum pedals. The E350 Coupe also adds perforated front brake discs with Silver-painted calipers (standard on the E550 Coupe), and a lowered sport suspension. The E550 Coupe adds a flat-bottom sport steering wheel.
While the pillarless hardtop design of the E-Class Coupes uses concealment to make a statement, gleaming LED illumination creates an undeniable presence. With bright white LED Daytime Running Lamps in the front air dam, and wide, wraparound LED taillamps sweeping into the sculpted rear flanks, the E-Class Coupes command attention whether they're coming or going.
Interior
It's a signature of a Mercedes-Benz coupe: a cabin that's exquisitely crafted for precisely four passengers. Each of its four seats is contoured for the individual support and lasting comfort of its sole occupant. Deep bolsters, integrated head restraints and hand-fitted leather upholstery are inspired by a rich heritage of racing success and refined luxury.
User-friendly innovation puts abundant technology within reach. With a multifunction steering wheel and convenient central controller, the COMAND system puts audio, vehicle settings and the optional hard-drive navigation with Enhanced Voice Control as close as your fingertips or your voice. The standard Bluetooth® system eases hands-free calling and wireless streaming of your digital audio player.
Included in the optional Premium 1 Package, a 12-speaker harman/kardon LOGIC7® system outputs 450 watts of Dolby® Digital 5.1 surround sound. Listening choices are seemingly endless: beyond the standard in-dash DVD/CD player, the Package adds HD Radio™ stations, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, iPod® integration, a memory card reader, and a 10GB Music Register for storing your digital music.
Performance
Both the 3.5L V-6 in the E350 Coupe and the 4.6L twin-turbo V-8 of the E550 Coupe breathe deeply, wind up quickly and thrust forward eagerly. A rapid-multispark ignition system fires up to four times in a millisecond. High-pressure Direct Injection micro-manages the fuel spray as quickly as 0.1 millisecond. So their greater response comes with higher efficiency and ultra-low emissions, too.
The world's first 7-speed automatic transmission has been reengineered for smoother, more efficient and more responsive performance. An electronic selector and standard paddle shifters allow full control of gear changes without taking a hand from the 3-spoke steering wheel.
The AGILITY CONTROL suspension on the E350 Coupe instantly recalibrates to the road surface, ideally balancing handling with comfort as conditions change. Sport tuning is included with the Appearance Package. On the E550 Coupe, a sport-tuned Dynamic Handling suspension lets you alter the damping rates, accelerator response and shift points with the touch of a single button.
Lift off the accelerator quickly and Predictive Brake Priming sets the pads closer to the discs, for more immediate response when you hit the brakes. In the rain, Automatic Brake Drying gently applies the brakes periodically, to sweep away water build-up. During uphill starts, Hill-Start Assist helps prevent unwanted rollback. And a HOLD feature can make stop-and-go traffic a little easier.
Safety
Optional DISTRONIC PLUS active cruise control automatically slows down or stops the vehicle in response to car traffic ahead. Its PRE-SAFE Brake feature can sense an impending collision and apply full braking. Optional Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist can help alert you to unseen vehicles in the next lane, help warn you of drifting out of lane, and with available active technology, help steer the car back if you disregard the alerts.
The E-Class Coupes are a protective showcase of Mercedes-Benz safety firsts. Among their innovations, PRE-SAFE® can detect conditions that suggest a collision or rollover is imminent, then adjust the front seat belts, front passenger seat, windows and sunroof, to better prepare the occupants in the moments before a collision.
